It may be surprising but favoritism is legal in most cases. It will certainly cause workplace friction and dissatisfaction and is not a good practice but it is legal. This favoritism become very illegal when it is (or appears to be) based on gender, pregnancy, religion, ageâ€¦etc. Favoritism is very poor management and indicates unprofessional behavior by the manager. But, it is legal. If a manager is friends with Bob and gives Bob more hours than Jon (Bob and Jon are same age, raceâ€¦etc) it is legal.
